Abstract

Aerial oxidation of solution of chemically synthesized Mo-Fe-S cluster [Cl2FeS2MoS2FeCl2](2-) has been shown to yield a 1.50 : 1 mixture ofMoOS32- and MoS42-. It is evident that the ratio of the concentrationof MoOS32- and MoS42- is lower than that produced by the oxidative degradation of natural FeMo-co (Delta MoOs32-/Delta CMos(4)(2-) = 3:1), so it can be inferred that the oxidative degradation of the cluster containing MoS4 core can not give the same result with the oxidative degradation of natural FeMo-co, and there should be three sulfur atoms inmolybdenum-micro-surrounding on nitrogenase
