Abstract

The structure, Curie temperature and magnetostriction of (Dy0.65Tb0.25Pr0.1)(Fe1-xAlx)(3) (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.30) alloys were investigated using optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, electron probe microanalysis, vibrating sample magnetometer and standard strain gauge techniques. It was found that these alloys are multiphase. When x less than or equal to 0.10, the main phase possessesthe PuNi3-type rhombohedral structure and becomes CeNi3-type hexagonal when x>0.25. When 0.10<x less than or equal to 0.25, both structurescoexist. A minor phase (Dy,Tb,Pr)(6)(Fe,Al)(23) exists in all alloys,which increases with increasing Al content. The Curie temperature andthe room-temperature magnetostriction of the (Dy0.65Tb0.25Pr0.1)(Fe1-xAlx)(3) alloys decrease with increasing Al substitution for Fe.
