Abstract

The authors hypothesized that there is a tendency to neglect fundamental job requirements such as those related to attendance, substance abuse, theft, safety, and violence when evaluating job applicants. Basedon a survey of professional secretaries (n = 52), fundamental requirements that were considered just as important as task-focused requirements (e.g., grammatical skills, typing skills, spelling ability) were less likely to be assessed using either non-scientific or scientific selection procedures.
