Abstract

Positron emission tomography (PET) has developed in recent years to be a powerful clinical and research technique in the field of oncology. By utilising positron emitting radiopharmaceuticals which target unique metabolic characteristics of malignant cells, information regardingtumour viability and response to treatment may be obtained noninvasively. New generation whole body PET scanners have also made possible the evaluation of large regions of the body for more accurate tumour staging. Clinical studies have shown a potential role for F-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET in the staging of colorectal cancer, and in the detection of occult disease in patients with elevated serum markers. Distinguishing equivocal post-surgical changes on CT or MRI from recurrentdisease may also be accurately performed with F-18 FDG PET, particularly in patients with rectal scar. The prediction of tumour response tochemotherapy with F-18 labelled drugs such as 5-fluorouracil has alsobeen demonstrated. PET is emerging as a promising modality in the clinical management of selected patients with colorectal carcinoma.
