Abstract

We introduce a neural network using new pulse arithmetic, in which a signal is represented with a random pulse stream and its value is defined as the ratio of ones and zeros in its random pulse stream. We present simple circuits to implement a sigmoid function and basic operations and propose a new neuron model. We derive a learning algorithm for feedforward networks with the proposed neuron model. We present the simulation results for a Hopfield network and a feedforward network. We also discuss the effects of inherent representational error and of weight quantization error.
