Abstract

Title of the paper: Development and maturation of neuroendocrine pathways of the hypothalamo-neurohypophysial system - The chicken embryo as model. The hypothalamus is the central integrative structure for theneuroendocrine regulation of water and electrolyte balance. Despite many different endocrine and other factors the neurohormone Argininte Vasotocin (AVT) plays an important role. In this review we described developmental and maturational aspects of the AVT synthesezing hypothalamo-neurohypophysial system. The chicken embryo and the newly hatched chicken were used for these in vivo and in vitro investigations. Although the onset of AVT gene expression and peptide synthesis is as early as around day 6 of embryonal life, osmoregulatory function may not occur before the end of the second week of incubation. Rapid maturationalprocesses during the last week of embryonal development lead to a ''close-to-mature'' response of the AVT secretory system to physiological(osmotic) stimulation in the one-day-old chicken.
