Abstract

The exchange-coupled magnetic behavior of a macrocyclic copper(II) aza-amido complex has been studied by a variety of methods both in the solid and solution states. Differences in magnetic interactions in these states have been observed. The solution state studies have been performed using temperature-dependent H-1 NMR chemical shifts caused by the antiferromagnetic nature of the complex. The resulting exchange coupling constants have been compared with the theoretically calculated results. Temperature dependent spin-lattice relaxation time (T-1) measured by the inversion recovery method indicates that the relaxation rateis found to be dominated by electron nuclear dipolar coupling modulated by exchange.
