Abstract

In the second half of 1992, a team at the Software Engineering Institute, Carnegie Mellon University, conducted a study of the state of thepractice with respect to operational use of CASE integration. It was more difficult to find examples than we had anticipated. Ultimately, the team did find a number of examples in large organizations having multiple years of CASE experience. Compared to the state of the art, what was found might be considered modest. Compared to industry norms, itwas quite impressive, requiring significant commitment and real attention to end-user needs. The interdependence of process and tools seemed important, and operational integration usually meant point-to-point integration, focused on a process piece. There were a number of sharedexperiences and common themes across the organizations.
