Abstract

Cavernous and venous angiomas are clinically rare entities although improved neuroradiological techniques increase the rate of diagnosis. Venous ''angiomas'' seem to be developmental anomalies without pathological relevance, usually following a benign clinical course. Thus, theyare hardly ever subject to neurosurgical therapy. In contrast, cavernomas may become symptomatic with epileptic seizures, intracerebral hemorrhage and focal neurological deficits. The further prognosis of patients with symptomatic cavernomas and frequently progressive neurological sequelae often demands neurosurgical exstirpation of these lesions. Microsurgical techniques with considerable low morbidity and good functional results enable the resection of cavernomas even in eloquent areas of the central nervous system.
