Abstract

Quench behaviour of test superconducting NbTi coil at external magnetic field was followed. Characteristics of training were related to applied hoop stresses (up to 300MPa) as well as to interactions between winding, coil form and bandage. Radial ponderomotive deformation of inner layer was measured by capacitive gauges in central plane of winding. The measurement of hoop strain of outer winding layer or bandage wasmade by means of resistive strain gauges technique eliminating effects of magnetostriction and magnetoresistance in the gauge output. The importance of appropriate bandage in suppression of winding mechanical instabilities was proved. The results are discussed with emphasize on practical consequences for winding technology details.
