Abstract

The structure, Curie temperature and magnetostriction of R(6)(Fe1-xAlx)(23) (R=Dy0.65Tb0.25Pr0.1, x less than or equal to 0.30) alloys havebeen investigated using optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, electron probe microanalysis, a.c. initial susceptibility and standard strain gauge techniques. It was found that the matrix phase of R(6)(Fe1-xAlx)(23) alloys, homogenized at 1000 degrees C for 15 days and then at 1200 degrees C for 7 days, is of Th6Mn23-type cubic structure, and the amount of second phase (Dy,Tb,Pr)(2)(Fe,Al)(17) increases slightly with increasing Al content. The Curie temperature and the room temperature magnetostriction of the R(6)(Fe1-xAlx)(23) alloys decrease with increasing substitution of Al for Fe.
