Abstract

The study examines the effects of emotional support and social undermining on psychological and physical well-being. Five hundred and sevenrespondents, randomly selected from The Directory of the National Association of Social Workers in 1989, responded to a mail survey containing measures of stress, well-being, emotional support, and social undermining. The results showed that emotional support was negatively related to the strain variables of irritability, anxiety, depression, and somatic complaints. Social undermining was positively related to thesestrains. The implications of these findings are discussed in terms ofminimising conflicting relationships in the workplace and promotion of supervisory support to enhance the well-being of human service professionals.
