Abstract

The aim of this trial was to prove the clinical effectiveness of passive leg muscle compression during gnaecological surgery. 19 females (age 33-72 years) without out venous diseases were examined with duplex sonography. Maximum venous flow velocity and the diameter of the femoral vein were measured under the application of different compression methods. We found, that the maximum venous flow velocity in the femoralvein is clearly reduced in abdominal and vaginal surgical position incomparison to the lying position. This is a result of an enlarged diameter of the femoral vein in a nat lying position. BS applying a SCD and Novamedix compression device the maximum mum venous flow velocity can be increased in the surgical position whereas antiembolic stockingsand compression bandages are not able to accelerate the venous return. Therefore we suggest, to apply SCD compression devices to reduce therisk of deep vein thromboses due to the specific patients placement in gynaecologic surgery.
