Abstract

Both the adventitious and axillary bud plants obtained from a pistillate clone of Chinese gooseberry (Actinidia deliciosa) grew vigorously after they were transplanted onto the field. They could not be distinguished in morphology from each other and from the original clone. In the third growing season after transplanting, all the axillary bud plants flowered and set fruit heavily. In contrast, only seven of the nineadventitious bud plants flowered on the terminal parts of the vines and more than half of the flowering vines had a few flowers (less than 40 flowers each vine) and consequently, the production was much lower. Axillary bud plants obtained from a staminate clone planted as pollinator bushes flowered synchronously with the female plants in the thirdgrowing season and the pollen of their flowers functioned well in thefruiting of the two types of the pistillate test tube plants. It is suggested that rejuvenation of the adventitious bud plants occurred, and use of adventitious bud plants in production of Chinese gooseberry is not adequate.
