Abstract

Borrelia burgdorferi can cause such a wide variety of symptoms that the diagnosis is often difficult. Neurologic manifestations are often inaugural in Lyme's disease, A case of severe meningoencephalitis in a 68-year-old man with an unremarkable medical history is reported, Standard diagnostic investigations were normal except for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis that showed marked lymphocytosis with increased levels of interferon alpha, Studies of late CSF and serum samples demonstrated significant intrathecal production of antibodies to B. burgdorferi and presence of genetic material from B. burgdorferi detectable by polymerase chain reaction.
