Abstract

This study is investigating the status of the estradiol and progesterone receptors in primary and secondary breast carcinomas before and under adjuvant hormone or chemotherapy and in sequential primary breast carcinomas. In the group of 127 female patients with primary lymph node metastases the ratio of positive to negative estradiol receptor levels changed from 89 to 38 in primary tumors into 67 to 60 at the primary metastases. For the progesterone receptor level a positive to negative ratio change from 78 to 49 in the primary tumors into 61 to 66 at the primary metastases was observed. The group of 86 female patients with secondary local recurrence displayed a change from positive to negative estradiol as well as progesterone receptor levels between primarytumor and recurrence in 93% of all cases. Under adjuvant therapy withtamoxifen female patients with secondary local recurrence showed a change from positive to negative estradiol receptor levels in 64%, from positive to negative progesterone receptor levels in 50% of the cases. In the four female patients with high dose medroxyprogesterone acetate treatment, a complete change from positive to negative levels of both receptor types between primary and secondary tumor was observed. 14 female patients with breast carcinoma developed a secondary carcinoma in the contralateral breast after an average time interval of 31.3 months. The collective showed a variation from positive to negative receptor levels for estradiol in one case, for progesterone a change from negative to positive receptor levels occurred in three cases.
