Abstract

Propulsion by solid propellant is used in many applications and many sizes (from anti-tank weapons to space launcher boosters). After a fewreferences are mentioned, allowing to measure the evolution of the technology, three categories of researches an identified as they apply to: - the elaboration and the combustion mechanisms of solid propellants, - the flow of the combustion products, - the coupling between the propellant combustion, the flow and a number of phenomena which have animpact on the proper operating of the motor (erosive burning of the grain, ablation of the internal thermal protections, stability...).Two types of constraints apply to this work: - new propellants are aimed for, which satisfy demands for reduced vulnerability, reduced signatureof the exhaust products, improved mechanical properties, higher specific impulse, reduced cost..., - the propellants are used in motors with harsh conditions of higher pressure, higher loading (with more complex geometries)..., with controlled costs, leading to the use of predictive computation techniques based upon modelizations, which are fed bydata obtained with and validated by comparing to highly instrumented experimental set-ups.
