Abstract

Migration of the triplet excitations in the complex Polyguanylic acid-Tb3+ ions has been investigated at 77 K. Decay curves of the Tb3+ ions luminescence (traps of excitations) are fitted by model dependenciesdeveloped on the basis of Monte Carlo simulation. A Gaussian energetic disorder of the Polyguanylic acid triplet level and a restricted polymer length are considered within this model. Poisson and binomial distributions of polymers by number of intrinsic traps and Terbium ions, respectively, are also taken into account. The Monte Carlo results arein good accord with the experimental data. A best fit permits a determination of the value of the jump rate, 0.9 x 10(2) s(-1), the mean number of polymer intrinsic traps, 22, and the maximum number of ions bound to polymer, 25. The small value of the jump rate is explained by disruption of the stacking between monomeric units of Polyguanylic aciddue to the inhomogeneous environment of the solvent. It is concluded that not all Terbium ions bound to a polymer are traps of excitation but most likely only those located inside the polymeric helix.
