Abstract

K-Shell minimum detection limits and background levels from analyses of thin foils of binary rare-earth and heavier metal fluorides, obtained by irradiation with 5-MeV protons at the Van de Graaff accelerator at Faure, are compared with previously reported data at 66 MeV. It wasfound that the peak-to-background ratios for 57 less than or equal toZ less than or equal to 64 were higher with 5-MeV protons. In spite of the lower X-ray production cross-sections at 5 MeV, the levels of detection were comparable to those obtained using 66-MeV irradiation.
