Abstract

This study on the effects of late career unemployment on lifestyle focuses on the impact of joblessness on the individual, family, leisure, and lifestyle. Data derived from the administration of a lifestyle questionnaire revealed that unemployment had psychologically devastatingand deleterious effects on most individuals, Job loss affected the family and often caused conflict and discontent. It affected leisure participation in and out of the home, with decrements in activities that were costly. A social-active lifestyle pattern before unemployment could change to domestic-passive if an individual was severely psychologically affected and financially deprived. A social-active lifestyle could also change to domestic-active if income loss made participation inout-of-home activities difficult. Generally, in late career unemployed people tended to continue their lifestyle pattern developed before unemployment by adapting, substituting and adjusting to activities thatwere once affordable. Coping strategies are suggested with the use ofpre-existing skills, access to mutual aid, involvement in voluntary activities and participation in publicly provided programs.
