Abstract

It has been demonstrated that signal distortions arising from the interplay of linear dispersion and fibre nonlinearity can be annihilated completely in a system incorporating a midway optical-phase conjugatorby requiring perfect power symmetry and vanishing second-order dispersion. The authors present a detailed numerical analysis for upgrading the embedded standard single-mode fibre system to ultrahigh capacitiesbeyond 10 Gbit/s. It is shown that, as long as the fibre-input power is adjusted to the amplifier spacing according to simple formalism, a nearly data-rate-independent transmission over the anomalous-dispersive standard fibre is achievable.
