Abstract

A new instrument, based on filtered blackbody radiations in the far infrared (FIR), was used to investigate, at millimetric spatial resolution, fibre orientation anistropy and alignment as well as basis weight. We tested five paper samples, made from 100% bleached softwood kraftpulp including 0.25% of stained fibre. The difference between jet andwire speed of the Fourdrinier formation table was tuned to generate five different anisotropy values. Far infrared data of 2D, MD and CD scans were correlated with values from low spatial resolution testing techniques such as colorimetric, zero span, etc. Statistical distribution analysis of basis weight, fibre orientation anisotropy and dominant fibre-orientation have shown that orientation fluctuations were related to the anisotropy level of the sheets but no significative correlation between anisotropy and basis weight was detected. Spectral density analyses have revealed what could be called anisotropy floc size and its unexpected relationship with anisotropy mean value. Finally, we present 2D images used for studying correlations between fibre orientation and basis weight within the flocs.
