Abstract

Recent theoretical advances on the electric double layer challenging the classical Stern-Grahame model are recalled. Own data of the group on ionic adsorption make clearer the ideas derived from statistical treatments or help to understand old results that could not be understood in the frame of the classical model. The appearence of specific adsorption of halides on mercury is shown to be entirely due, in the limits of accuracy, to the flaws of the GC theory. Oxyanion desorption at increasing salt concentration is shown to result from their hydration. New statistical treatments of the double layer should be envisaged taking into account ionic hydration in addition to the other interactionsalready examined in previous treatments in order to predict in particular data on oxyanions.
