Abstract

The aim of the present study was to examine weather the antioxidativevitamins C and E and even the Ca2+-antagonist gallopamil may protect isolated cardiomyocytes of adult rats from oxidative damage by free oxygen radicals. Reactive oxygen spezies were generated by photoexcitation of the light-sensitive dye rose bengal, producing singlet-oxygen. Vitamin C and E caused a dose-dependently increase of rod-shaped cardiomyocytes, the use of both vitamins simultaneously provided an overadditive protection. The Ca2+-antagonist gallopamil showed a protective potential in a far less extent.
