Abstract

39 healthy young men were examined electrocardiographically by two different corrected lead systems, the Nelson- and the Frank-lead system. The differences between the results derived with both systems proved to be statistically significant (p = 0.05). They can be visualized more clearly in QRS-vector loops than in scalar ECGs. It is shown that the Frank-lead system is insufficient for exact estimation of the heart dipole. Accuracy of voltage measurements and high diagnostic validity can be reached by application of the Nelson-lead system, by which the patient's individual thorax shape and size is taken into account for the voltage measurement procedure as well as for the calculation of thedipole moment of his heart. It is concluded that Frank-lead ECGs which are tried for improvement by calculated correction factors includingindividual body parameters, do not give reliable diagnostic information.
