Abstract

The wetting properties of PbBiSrCaCuO (BiSCO) ceramic by liquid silver and its Cu, Pb and Bi alloys have been studied by measuring the contact angle vs. contact time and concentration ranging from 1 to 7 at%, under air atmosphere. While all these alloys were found to promote wettability, the most efficient was Ag-Cu (greater-than-or-equal-to 4 at %), giving a contact angle as low as 18-degrees. The data are analyzedin terms of a simple model that includes effects of interfacial segregation on interfacial tension, showing the different role of Cu compared to Pb or Bi. These findings have important implications for optimizing the transport properties in superconducting-metal composite systems, some of which have recently received considerable attention due to potential technological applications.
