Abstract

A plant treating fish processing wastewaters was monitored over one year to prove the practical advantages achievable through the internal production of RBCOD. A clear improvement of the effluent quality with lower NOx-N content and the disappearance of fluctuation of nitrates were obtained. Changing the equalization management from aerobic to anoxic, it was possible to utilise battered waste as internal carbon source. Plant reliability was confirmed during the entire observation period. The plant broke down twice electromechanically and it required more than 24 days to restore normal plant conditions. The advantages obtained overcome the risks associated with the new scheme adopted.
