Abstract

A method is demonstrated for compensating birefringence effects in nominally circular-core fibre wound onto piezoelectric cylinders designed for use as phase modulators. Two fibre-wound piezoelectric cylindersare used, with the fast axis of one aligned with the slow axis of theother using a hulk-optic half waveplate. It is shown that, compared with a single element modulator, the compensation achieved is necessaryand more than sufficient if used as a phase modulator in a fibre stellar interferometer.
