Abstract

To explain the enhancement of interfacial adhesive strength between cellulose and lignin by the presence of lignin-carbohydrate complex (LCC) at their interface, the changes of hydrophobicity of a regenerated cellulose surface by spreading LCC were investigated by a contact angle method. It was found that the contact angle of glycerol drops on a cellulose surface was increased by spreading LCC, and the value obtained was much the same as that on a lignin surface. This behavior indicates that the lignin part of LCC molecules became aligned with the air side, and the carbohydrate part of them did the same with the celluloseside. It is thought that the molecular localization of LCC contributes to the enhancement of the interfacial adhesive strength between cellulose and lignin.
