Abstract

Phase equilibria in C-Cr-Fe alloys containing 2 to 3 wt.% C and 35 to55 wt.% Cr have been investigated by means of differential thermal analysis (DTA), optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The existence of the transition plane involving the bcc, M23C6, M7C3 and liquid phases at approx. 1300-degrees-C has been confirmed. The co-existing liquid phase has been found to contain approx. 2.7 wt.% C and 55 wt.% Cr. Additionally, the thermodynamic description of the C-Cr-Fe system has been amended to reproduce the experimental results of this work.
