Abstract

Kinetics of copper(II)-catalyzed autoxidation of sulphur(IV), in the form of bisulphite, in acetate-buffered solutions obey the rate law R(obs) = k(5) [S(IV)] + k(6) [Cu(II)][S(IV)](2)[H+](-1) The buffer exerts a slight rate decreasing effect, showing the higher acetato complexes to be less reactive. Substitution of the second sulphite into the coordination sphere of copper(II) appears to be the rate-limiting.
