Abstract

The rate of production of molecular hydrogen upon illumination of CdSsuspensions in Na2S/Na2SO3 solution have been studied. Enhancement ofthe rate of hydrogen evolution has been observed by mixing CdS with ZnS. From the study of variation in composition of CdS and ZnS, two particular compositions have been found to be very efficient for hydrogenproduction in sunlight. Marked enhancement in the rate of hydrogen liberation has been achieved by incorporating n-type silicon (phosphorusdoped) in CdS. The maximum rate of hydrogen evolution has been observed with the photocatalyst [Pt (1.5 wt%)/CdS/n-Si (6-7 wt%)/ZnS (1.5:1 wt ratio)].
