Abstract

Critical flicker frequency and serum gamma-GT were analysed in 66 headache patients with drug abuse. The data were compared to those of 39 headache patients without drug abuse. Patients with drug abuse showed a significantly decreased flicker frequency and significantly more often elevated gamma-GT values in comparison to patients without drug abuse. 89.7% of patients without drug abuse exhibited both parameters within the normal range. However, 59.1% of the patients with drug abuse showed at least one of both values beyond the normal range (decreased critical flicker frequency: 13.6%; elevated gamma-GT: 33.3%; both parameters: 12.1%). In headache patients with possible drug abuse analysis of both critical flicker frequency and serum gamma-GT should be taken into account. Only if both parameters are taken into account, the probability to get indications of- sometimes concealed - drug abuse in headache patients is nearly 60%.
