Abstract
Phase equilibria at 900 degrees C in the quaternary system Ti-Al-Sn-Nand the ternary boundary system Ti-Sn-N were investigated within the composition range AlN-TiN-(Al,Sn)(liq.)-Ti-3(Al,Sn) using XRD and metallography of are melted and heat treated samples. No new quaternary orternary phase occurred. In the ternary system Ti-Sn-N the phase Ti3Sndissolves about 12 at.% nitrogen. In the quaternary system the ternary phase Ti2AlN1-x shows a high solubility for tin, which enlarges the cell parameters to a = 0.30585(9) and c = 1.3726(4) nm. No other quaternary solid solubility was found. The following four-phase equilibria were observed: Ti2AlN+Ti5Sn3+TiAl2+TiAl, Ti2AlN+Ti6Sn5+Ti5Sn3+TiAl2, Ti2AlN+Ti6Sn6+TiAl3+TiAl2, (Sn,Al)(liq.)+Ti2AlN+Ti6Sn5+TiAl3, (Sn,Al)(liq.)+TiN+Ti2AlN+TiAl3, TiN+Ti2AlN+Ti3Sn3+Ti-3(Sn,Al), and (Sn,Al)(liq.)+Ti2AlN+Ti6Sn5+TiN. The isothermal section of Ti-Al-Sn-N is presentedas an isothermal network of these four-phase spaces.
