Abstract

This paper presents an analysis and experimental study for evaluatingthe time cost of solving difference equations with a subtask distributor on a multicomputer system. The system is composed of N computer systems connected via a shared bus. The time cost for solving the equations is a function of the number of computers, the computers' speed, the shared bus bandwidth and width, bus contention, intercommunication time, the partitioning algorithm, and the partitioning overhead time. The A algorithm was used to partition the overall task, composed of M difference equations, into several subtasks and optimally distribute them over the multicomputer system taking into account time cost and intercommunication time. A multicomputer set-up composed of personal computers and a user interface has been implemented in order to analyze and obtain the time cost for different system configurations.
