Abstract

In this study we investigated the effect of temperature on phototransformation of photoactive Pchlide into Chlides in etiolated barley leaves (Hordeum vulgare). Since the ratio of Pchlide(638) to Pchlide(650) in etiolated barley leaves was changed by heat treatment, it was evident that photoactive Pchlides (Pchlide(638), Pchlide(650)) do not show the same sensitivity to heat. Heat treatment at 45 degrees C decreasedthe amount of Pchlide(650), and therefore the main precursor in Chlide synthesis became Pchlide(638). It has been established earlier that a low-intensity flash may trigger the formation of Chlide(672) as a final stable Chlide species. However, we showed that after heat treatment, a high-intensity flash may also trigger the formation of Chlide(672) instead of the formation of Chlide(684) as observed in etiolated leaves that have not been exposed to heat. We have found that the heat-induced modification changes the pattern of Pchlide phototransformation triggered by light.
