Abstract

In two recently proposed graser concepts, neutron bursts would be employed to pump the excited states to inversion. We describe the kinetics of such hypothetical grasers by using coupled Maxwell-Schrodinger equations to derive a kinetic equation, apply it to evaluate a proposed system pumped by the Co-57(n, p)Fe-57 reaction, and determine the neutron-burst requirements for net gain. We find, in agreement with previous studies of pumping with neutron bursts, that it is not feasible to pump a graser directly with any existing source of neutrons.
