Abstract

Optical properties of Tm3+ ions in zinc borosulphate (ZnSO4 . 7H(2)O B2O3) and alkali zinc borosulphate (R(2)SO(4) + ZnSO4 . 7H(2)O + B2O3, R(2)SO(4) = Li2S4 . H2O, Na2SO4 or K2SO4) glasses are reported. Theassigned energy level data of Tm3+ (4f(12)) in borosulphate glasses as well as data that are available in the literature for other Tm glasses are analysed in terms of a parameterized model Hamiltonian. The standard deviations of the data fits are between 21 and 75 cm(-1) so thatthe energy level schemes of the Tm3+(4f(12)) ions in a variety of glasses are reasonably well reproduced. Radiative transition rates for the fluorescent levels of Tm: borosulphate glasses are determined by using Judd-Ofelt theory. From the magnitudes of the radiative parameters various potential laser transition properties are compared and discussed with similar results. The nephelauxetic effects on the flee-ion energy levels of Tm3+ ions in different glass media are also discussed.
