Abstract

PIXE measurements of elemental concentrations of light elements alongthe length of a fungal hyphae provide important data for the researchinto plant physiology, which other techniques are unable to due to the lack of sensitivity and or spatial resolution. The Oxford Scanning Proton Microprobe was used to measure the elemental concentrations of phosphorus, sulphur, potassium and calcium in the fungus fusarium culmorum under normal conditions. These results were compared with hyphae treated with two groups of chemical agents, A and B. Treatment with A and B changes the morphology of the hyphae. Special emphasis was thus put on the concentrations at the tip of the hyphae, as this represents the growing region. The differences between groups were established from elemental groupings.
